A manga tie-in to Joss and Drew’s movie was announced by Tokyopop back in 2009. Titled “The Cabin In The Woods: Land of the Rising Terror”, it was said to be an “an original story set in and inspired by the world of the feature film”.
“We are extremely excited about the manga tie-in we’re releasing in conjunction with the film,” said Troy Lewter, TOKYOPOP Editor of the new manga. “We’re all big fans of the Joss and Drew, and are honored to be given the opportunity to expand upon the film world.”
But in 2011, the Tokyopop publisher closed its US operations and there has been no news about it since. The only pic to be released featuring characters from the manga tie-in can be found here (beware potential spoilers). ‘Rising Terror’ is rumoured to be finished but most likely will never see the light of day.
A Dark Horse four issue mini-series that was intended to a prequel to the movie was announced back in 2009 as well. At SDCC that year, Joss Whedon told Newsarama that the intention was to have different writers working on different stories.
"When we were talking about it, the thought was to do it as a series of stories, again in the EC mode"
Some details about were given out by Dark Horse’s Scott Allie back in 2010.
"It’s essentially a prequel, but it’s a very different kind of prequel. Technically it prequels the movie, but it’s not your standard prequel at all. The story comes before the movie, but to do the comics before the movie comes out would give away a bunch of shit that we couldn’t give away, you know? "
However the project was later abandoned. It is not known if any art from the mini-series exists.
